Meet Mandy

The Heart Behind Mandy Kaur Photography

I am a maternity, newborn, children, and portrait photographer who also likes to create Photo books.

About Me

I grew up in rural Punjab, where light is generous, golden, and stretches long across fields and makes ordinary things look majestic. I was enchanted by what light did to the natural world around me. The way shadows moved. The scenery changed in the split of a second. The manner in which wildlife revealed itself. The way colors shifted and harmonised with changing weather. This dance happened before my contemplative eyes and I learned photography not in a classroom but in the fields, and on the road, travelling. I even learned the technical settings, camera in hand, chasing light, snow, rain and hail.

Mandy Kaur

I studied advertising for my undergrad, where photography was one subject among many. But deep down I knew photography is going to be my primary medium of expression.

So for the last 15 years I have been travelling and photographing landscapes and portraits. Every city, every country, every stranger’s face has been a lesson in aesthetics, in composition. It has been a gift that keeps on giving.

My Process

I’m also a watercolour painter. Which means when I look through a lens, composing a shot, I’m reading color, studying the light, observing the human silhouettes punctuating the scene in my frame.

A painter and a photographer are after the same thing, really. They long for moments where light, perspective and feeling come together and create an honest and never seen before picture.

I don’t like to stage or manufacture moments. I don’t pose people into something they’re not. I watch. I patiently wait and let things unfold. That’s how I am able to capture the essence of a person, without being directive or limiting. Especially with children, I like to form a connection first, and rest is just play. It takes care of itself and produces wonderful results.

My Belief

Photography, for me, has always been about timeless connection.

When I photograph you, I become a part of your story, forever. The images we make together are the ones your children will look back at someday. It’s a story your loved ones will tell, or talk about for a long long time. I take that sincerely.

Photographs, after all, are proof that something beautiful and real happened.

Working With Me

I work between Punjab and Canada, and I bring the same unhurried eye to both worlds.

I specialise in maternity, newborn, children and portrait photography. I prefer working with natural light as much as possible, before relying on other forms of lighting. I am considerate of my client’s vision and blend it with possibilities I see for them. I also love to design storybooks, because a photograph is one moment, a photo after photo stringed together is the whole truth, a complete story. I want you to have something you can hold on to and cherish forever. You just need to show up as you are— and I’ll take care of everything else.
